The Gentle Season
THE PAINTINGS OF PENNY OTWELL
The Ansel Adams Gallery | Yosemite National Park, CA
“The Gentle Season” reflects Penny Otwell’s love for the beauty of Yosemite. Using her palette knives and brushes outdoors on a portable easel, she captures the essence of each moment, letting nature inspire her creativity.
Artist’s Statement
To paint is to love and see the world with love—especially in Yosemite, where I have lived since 1964. All of us are in awe of the unique beauty of the Park, and I am intrigued by the design component in nature, which I like to share with the viewer through the composition, texture, and color I achieve with palette knives and brushes. With my eyes and heart leading the way, a painting portrays what I see and feel while working outdoors on a portable easel. It is a direct, immediate response. Wind, sun, mosquitoes, and crowds do challenge me, but I have learned to be patient and trust in this painting process.
I have always been a “walker” and have traveled many miles of trails in the Sierra, leaving behind visual memories and pencil drawings of the backcountry places I have visited. My favorite aspects of this place inspire these paintings, and I wish to share with you the joy I feel for Yosemite’s landscape.
