ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
The title of this exhibition, Near and Far: a Visual Journey, suggests an assortment of geographic locations. From Maine to Mongolia, you’ll witness how I use a camera to capture and interpret my surroundings, no matter where they might be.
But there’s another element to this near and far aspect. I’m captivated by our ever-evolving medium and have traveled down a photographic timeline that begins with my first platinum/palladium prints from early digital negatives (1992) and continues with my explorations using 24K gold and other precious metals. Best of all, more photographic adventures lie ahead.
Philosophically, I am more concerned with emotional honesty than literal honesty in photography. I strive to create photographs that act as an expressive launching pad, leaving room for viewers to complete the visual voyage and shape an interpretive narrative of their own. The amount of modification I impart to an image depends on the subject and the mood I’m striving to create, and possibly how much caffeine I’ve consumed during the day.
