Late in 1925, Best’s Studio’s opened its doors for the first time in the New Government Center, now known as Yosemite Village, in Yosemite National Park. What had begun as an artist’s studio confined to a rustic tent over near the Yosemite Chapel, with rocks hand painted on its canvas surface to resemble a more durable and substantial structure, was now rooted on a solid foundation. Many years later, Best’s Studio would change its name to The Ansel Adams Gallery, but the family behind its founding was — and still is — in charge of its operation. To this day we are a fourth generation business, and the longest, continuously run business in any National Park.
Started in 1902, the studio’s original proprietor was Harry Best, a political cartoonist turned en plein air oil painter. His daughter, Virginia Best, grew up in the Yosemite, spending summers summiting peaks (including a first female ascent of a route on Mt. Whitney) and met a young Ansel Adams in 1921 while he was working nearby in Curry Village. In 1928, the couple would be married in the parlor of the current gallery, and in 1936 would take over management of the business. The fortuity of this partnership, their shared love of the arts and environment and dedication to seeing the natural beauty of their cherished Sierra protected for future generations has sustained the gallery to this day, and helped promote the ideals and aesthetic that the Best-Adams family has long held sacrosanct.
In celebration of our 100th anniversary in a gallery built by Mr. Best in 1925, we are thrilled to exhibit a selection of our namesake’s inspiring and passionate photographs ranging from rare early Adams works, to the iconic, heroic landscapes that became Ansel’s trademark in the middle of the 20th century. “Providence and Pathos” commemorates the deep-rooted philosophies of our artistic traditions and serendipity of our time and place to share it with the world as encouraged and stewarded by Ansel and Virginia Best Adams and their family for so many years.
